  • Kaan Took

    ,

This original Mayan Tiki painting references to the powerful and mysterious Kaanul dynasties of the Mayan empire, also known as the Snake Kings.  They took rule around the sixth century of the low lands in Guatemala, where they spread to the largest and most powerful Mayan kingdom known to date.  Kaan Took was modeled after the silhouette of a tiki mug and holds a similar posture to a Hawaiian tiki god.  This piece was a collaborative work of art with artist Brad “Tiki Shark” Parker and although the original painting has sold you can find Kaan Took in a variety of canvas and paper prints as well as my first tiki mug!

  • Every Dog Has His Best Day Ever

“Every Dog Has His Best Day Ever” is centered around the Haunted Mansions biggest underdog.  The piece depicts two of the only living characters in the whole ride, which are the Caretaker and his dog Bones.  Being dog lovers, every time my wife and I go on the ride we always talk about how we wish we could throw that poor dog a turkey leg or churro to help fatten him up! So I decided what better time than the Haunted Mansions 50th Anniversary to give this dog his best day ever.  Bones is shown standing on a pile of Disney snacks with a turkey leg in his mouth, Mickey Ears on his head, and a Magic Band around his leg.  His owner looks on astounded and is in disbelief that he has left the Mansion and is out cruising the park!

The painting is made with acrylic on a mounted Birch panel and measures 12.5″x15″x1.5″ and is ready to hang.

  • Captain Calamari

This original submarine art is what you get when you mix Captain Nemo with some Beatle’s lyrics, sealed in a tin can, and then sprinkle in a little Rapa Nui! “Captain Calamari” is a narrative of an octopus driving a van submarine looking for his long lost garden.  Fish dart away as this rusty contraption explores the depths of the Pacific.  One of Captain Calamri’s trusty, crabby shipmates operates the periscope to get a better view of things as they plunge deeper into the abyss. Although the original painting sold you can still pick up a paper or canvas print!

  • Variant Sketch Cover of Pineapple Man

    ,

This is my first and possibly only Variant Sketch Cover I will do.  I drew this design during HawaiiCon this year while at my booth.  I was originally going to draw a shark tooth paddle style weapon on this cover then decided to read the comic.  After reading the book I decided to change my design to make it reflect the story better.  This blank issue was given to me by author, artist, and creator of PineappleMan, Sam Campos.  I used Micron pens and Copic markers to finish the design.

  • Sergeant Tiki

I’m calling this one “Sergeant Tiki” and it is a salute to how returning soldiers, from the South Pacific, introduced tiki culture to Americans after WWII. Many of these vets brought home tropical souvenirs and told great stories of their adventures from this far away paradise. “Sergeant Tiki” also reflects my own personal experience in the army, as well as my residence in Hawai’i. I spent 4 1/2 years in the military and was stationed in a small Bavarian town in Germany called Kitzingen. I later got deployed to Macedonia and Kosovo (the Disneyland of Europe) and spent about 8 months there. Now that I teach art here in Hawai’i, I make it a point to tell my students about my service and deployment, and I always get the same question: “Did you kill anyone?” And since I want to seem like a tough guy, I usually respond with, “I’m not allowed to talk about that”. Truth be told when my dad asked me, “What did you do in the Army son?” I answered with one word, “HIDE!” So Sergeant Tiki really encompasses the kind of soldier I was, I wanted to appear tough, but honestly I just wanted to sit on the beach and drink Mai Tais while I threw Pineapples at my commanders.

This painting was made with acrylic on birch panel and measures 5″x7″.  It comes in a rustic wood frame bringing the total size to 11.5″x9.5″.

  • Ouroboros Tiki Mug

“Ouroboros Tiki” is a painting of a tiki mug character, who symbolizes the ancient Egyptian ouroboros symbol in a humorous way.  The ouroboros symbol usually depicts a serpent or dragon eating its own tail. It is a symbol of infinity that is represented by something constantly recreating itself.  It also represents the infinite cycle of nature’s endless creation and destruction, life and death.

This piece was made during the 9th annual Mai Tai Festival at the Royal Kona Resort on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Painted with many layers of acrylic on birch panel, “Ourobors Tiki” comes in a custom frame.  The frame is embellished with hand-carved tiki corners and is stained a rich blue color.  The painting measures 8″x10″ and the frame brings the total size to 14.5″x12″.

  • Rafiki Tiki

Rafiki is one of my favorite characters from the Lion King and he is so cool that he even has a whole section at Animal Kingdom devoted to him, “Rafiki’s Planet Watch”.  I tried to make him a little darker of a character by replacing his gourds on his staff with skulls and gave him a more angular design reminiscent of a tiki carving.

The original painting is made with watercolor and ink on 140 lb. cold press paper.  It measures 5.5″x8.5″ unframed and comes in a clear protective sleeve with a stiff backing.

  • Out of Reach

“Out of Reach” was inspired by Main Street at the Magic Kingdom.  It shows a skeleton who lost his arm to the mighty strength of Mickey balloons.  The worst part is that his Magic Band is on that arm and he had a Fast Pass scheduled for Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Peter Pan’s Fligt, and Space Mountain!  Looks like it’s Stitches Great escape for this skelly.
